A large building where sick or injured people receive medical treatment and care.
Countable noun. Plural: hospitals. In British English, you say 'go to hospital' (no article) when you are a patient: 'She went to hospital.' With the article, it means visiting: 'I went to the hospital to see my friend.' In American English: always 'the hospital'.
The NHS (National Health Service) provides free hospital care for everyone in the UK. The symbol of a hospital is a red cross or a blue H on road signs. 'Hospital corners' are a way of folding bed sheets very neatly, like in a hospital.
