いいえ (īe)
Used to give a negative answer, refuse a request, or disagree with something. The opposite of 'yes'.
Interjection and determiner. As a negative answer: 'No, thank you.' As a determiner: 'There is no milk left.' 'No' before a noun means 'not any'. 'No way!' means absolutely not. Say 'no, thank you' (not just 'no') to be polite when refusing.
In English-speaking cultures, saying 'no' directly is generally acceptable and considered honest. However, the British often soften 'no' with phrases like 'I'm afraid not' or 'Not really'. Saying 'no, thank you' when declining food or drink is considered polite.
